Scorpions are insects that can easily be recognized by their large claws (known as pedipalps) and their segmented, curved tail ending in a stinger. They range in size from just 1 centimeter to 23 centimeters. Their stings are painful, but usually harmless to people. There are around 1,750 known species of which about 25 have venom strong enough to kill a human being. They can be found on all continents except Antarctica.
